Mad Hatter Day is celebrated on October 6 as the Mad Hatter top hat is labeled “10/6” It is a good day to remember,
“We are all mad here.”
I love Alice in Wonderland. It is clever and silly. Being a pragmatic person it is fun to look through the looking glass and revel in its non-sense that somehow makes sense.
Below are pictures of Abigail (age 3) and Eleanor (2 months) as Alice and the Cheshire cat respectively. This was Halloween 2014. I made these costumes per Abigail’s request. As for Charles and I, we sported hand-crafted shirts to represent the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts. Abigail was obsessed with the movie. We just started reading the book together.
I have put together some quotes. I love these quotes for various reasons, some because they’re silly, some because they are smart and some because that’s the only way it makes sense. I would quote the whole book if I could. I envy Carroll’s ability to write and mean what his says.
Alice in Wonderland – Lewis Caroll
“I don't think..." then you shouldn't talk,” - Mad Hatter
“It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.” - Alice
“Begin at the beginning, and go on till you come to the end: then stop.” - the King
“How long is forever? Sometimes, just one second.” – Alice and the Rabbit
“Curiouser and curiouser!” - Alice
“We’re all mad here” –The Cheshire Cat
And lastly, I love the below exchange because words matter.
“Then you should say what you mean,” the March Hare went on.
“I do,” Alice hastily replied; “at least—at least I mean what I say—that’s the same thing, you know.”
“Not the same thing a bit!” said the Hatter. “Why, you might just as well say that ‘I see what I eat’ is the same thing as ‘I eat what I see’!”
“You might just as well say,” added the March Hare, “that ‘I like what I get’ is the same thing as ‘I get what I like’!”
